Molecatcher, a 5.0%abv all-malt brew from Wiltshire brewer Moles, has been voted Champion Strong Bitter by CAMRA at the Champion Beer of Britain Awards 2011, staged on the opening day of the annual Great British Beer Festival at Earls Court in London.

The beer beat off competition from eight other finalists – including ales by Black Sheep, Adnams, and Fullers – to be declared the best Strong Bitter in the UK.

Commenting on the success, Moles Brewery’s managing director Roger Catte said; “This is a major surprise. It’s usually golden ales that win awards, so for an all-malt, traditional strong bitter like Molecatcher to take top prize speaks volumes for the quality of our beers. Everybody at Moles has played a part in this fantastic achievement.”

Since he started the brewery in 1982, Roger Catte has steadfastly refused to allow anything other than malt, hops , yeast and of course water into his brewing process. There are no additional sugars, no extraneous adjuncts and chemicals, no fancy herbs or spices … or fruit. Just the basics. What many might call ‘traditional’ brewing, on a tower plant in a small brewery located on a former RAF base near Melksham.

The company has won awards in the past – Rucking Mole was a SIBA Champion – but by-and-large national recognition had passed the company by. That was until Tuesday when Roger Protz announced the winner of the Strong Bitter Class was Moles Molecatcher.

Molecatcher, the best strong bitter in Britain. Now everybody knows it!

Molecatcher is available from Moles Brewery or its distributors. Contact 01225 708842 or visit www.molesbrewery.com for more information.

For the second time in just three years, Moles Brewery’s premium brew Rucking Mole has been voted the best in the South West in the SIBA Beer Competition for 2009.

Judged by other brewers and industry experts at the Maltings Beer Festival in Newton Abbot on 22nd April, Rucking Mole was declared to be the top Best Bitter in the region, following similar success in 2007.

The beer, originally introduced as a seasonal brew to coincide with the Six-Nations rugby schedule, soon became so popular that it was added to Moles’ permanent range just a few years ago.

This latest award confirms local drinkers’ view that the 4.5% abv, malty, full-bodied best bitter has few peers in this part of the world.

Commenting on the success, Moles Brewery managing director Roger Catte said; “Rucking Moles is widely available throughout the region, in Moles own public house estate, and in leading free houses. For more information on availability, or how to purchase Rucking Mole for your own pub, visit the company’s website at www.molesbrewery.com
